W hen Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia began shooting his latest film in Bilbao almost two years ago, the Spanish director felt the themes of his low-budget, dystopian horror feature would be sufficiently universal to resonate with audiences around the world. Today, however, many are claiming that El Hoyo – known in English as The Platform – is the perfect parable for life in the time of the coronavirus and a visceral investigation of how a crisis can expose not only the stratification of human society but also the immutable strands of selfishness coded into our DNA. The parallels are certainly not hard to find. The Platform is set in a forbidding “vertical self-management centre” – a soaring series of concrete cells stacked one on top of the other, each holding two inmates. Every day, the eponymous platform, stacked with a lavish but finite supply of food and drink, descends, level by level. Those on each floor are free to decide how much they eat and how much they leave for those on the hundreds of levels beneath them. If they gorge themselves, they will starve those below; if they try to hoard food, the temperature in their cell will rise or fall fatally. While Gaztelu-Urrutia is delighted by the film’s growing audience on Netflix, he is as surprised by its freshly minted relevance as anyone else. “It’s an allegory about the distribution of wealth, which is a universal debate and a debate that’s been going on for as long as people have been around, ” he told the Guardian. At its heart, though, it is a film with an uncomfortable message. “The point of The Platform is that it isn’t about a war between those above and those below – we all have someone above us and someone below us, ” he said. It’s all very well, Gaztelu-Urrutia added, to demand action from the politicians and multibillionaires so many floors above, but their response – or lack of it – cannot be used to absolve us of individual responsibility. “You can look above you and think that the people up there should be doing much more, but then you look down and see there are many levels below yours, ” he said. “The question is: what am I going to do from where I am to fight this selfish structure that runs throughout our society and species? ”.

A mi me pareció que el hoyo es una analogía del mundo y la sociedad en la que vivimos, cada nivel representa la vida en sí, todos pasamos altibajos, buenos y malos momentos, sin embargo si fuéramos más empáticos unos con otros podríamos sobrevivir, debido a los siguientes puntos: 1) todos ingresaban por diversas razones, eso simboliza que cada quien tiene luchas personales, objetivos y sueños diferentes 2) al preguntarles cuál es su comida favorita, implica que cada persona al ingresar ahí iba a tener acceso a los alimentos y si cada uno respetara y tomara lo que le gusta, todos alcanzarían comida 3) cada quien podría llevar un objeto, y debido a que cada quien refleja su personalidad en lo que decidió llevar. El protagonista era una persona más intelectual y espiritual, llevó el libro de don quijote, los demás ya iban predispuestos a sobrevivir, llevaban armas, cuchillos, pistolas, sogas, etc 4) aquí el mensaje es que en un mundo donde todos podríamos convivir y llevar a una vida plena, el egoísmo como especie nos ha llevado a nuestra propia destrucción, todo sería tan fácil pero nos complicamos la existencia, humanos al fin y al cabo, irracionales, egoístas, inhumanos, solo quien ha aprendido y entendido el objetivo de vivir sobrevive, la niña a mi parecer es una alucinación, ya que al principio explican que no pueden ingresar personas menores de 16 años, el protagonista desde el principio demuestra que es un ser consciente, más racional y solo se va adaptando a las circunstancias tratando de dañar lo menos posible o ayudar en lo que puede a los demás, al llegar al nivel cero alucina a la niña, y se da cuenta que si todos mantuvieran esa inocencia, bondad y nobleza podrían sobrevivir, así es la vida, estamos en un mundo caótico sin embargo cada quien decide si realmente vive o solamente sobrevive.
